Revisiting Westworld recently made me realize how ahead of its time the show really was.
For those who haven’t seen it, Westworld is a science fiction series about a futuristic theme park populated by highly advanced artificial beings called “hosts.” Dr. Robert Ford, one of the park’s creators, is responsible for designing much of their intelligence and behavior.
In one scene, Ford describes the act of creating artificial life:
“We speak the right words. Then we create life itself out of chaos.”
What sounded like science fiction back then now feels remarkably relevant. Beneath today’s conversations with AI, neural networks are finding patterns and order in extraordinary complexity.
Later in the same conversation, Ford makes another observation:
“Evolution forged the entirety of sentient life on this planet using only one tool: the mistake.”
He then makes it personal:
“It also means that you must indulge me the occasional mistake.”
If we accept that people make mistakes, should we expect something we created to be any different?
AI is trained on what humans have produced, and what humans have produced has always been a work in progress built on corrections and refinements. AI reflects that same process. None of this excuses AI errors, but it does remind us that mistakes are part of any system built from human understanding.
The difference is that accountability still sits with the human using it. Or at least, it’s supposed to.
AI can influence a decision, but it cannot own one—especially in areas like healthcare, government, law, and finance, where someone still has to decide whether an answer makes sense and take responsibility for the outcome.
The trouble is that the more convincing AI’s answers become, the easier it is to treat that responsibility as a formality—a signature at the bottom of a page rather than a judgment actually made. Trusting an answer and owning it are two different things, and the gap between them is easy to lose track of precisely when the answer sounds most authoritative.
Mistakes were never the problem—they’re the cost of building anything that thinks. Losing track of who’s responsible for them is.
